Conservation of our Natural Resources

Conservation Diversity

Robin eggs, raspberries, wildflower blooms inside the bark of a sugar maple tree show MNF's efforts in simple conservation diversity.  Wild Canada Geese migrating to MNF's partner The Lenny Lake show MNF's efforts in a more complex conservation diversity.   The conservation work around Milewski Lake has taken over 40 years to reveal a stunning ecological diversity which many migrant birds and animals depend upon.  The geese shown here have flown in from New Mexico wintering areas in order to nest and have their young, from Lenny Lake the geese fly to the Arctic circle and places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska before returning to Lenny Lake for a few weeks each fall.   Neither of these images would be known if not for the tireless work of conservationist Lenard Milewski's efforts to give a portion of his Wisconsin farm "back to nature".

Agricultural Conservation

Soil health is at the heart of agricultural conservation.  MNF partners with farmers and farms to find the best practices that will keep our soils healthy now and far into the future.  An historical perspective helps to understand certain fields over the course of decades to understand techniques and strategies.  The picture at the left shows field #10 on the Milewski Farm with a great hay crop from the 1940's.  The image on the right shows the same field in 2010 with a corn crop yielding the proteins area dairy farmers need for their cows.  The Milewski's know their farm may have half "given back to nature" but the other half has to continue to feed the world.

Recreational Use

MNF believes being outside and in nature is a healthy choice.  The typical sports and recreational activities can also include taking time to be outside and draw or go for a pony cart ride.  Relaxing and being outside is part of recreating.  MNF also has worked with sportspeople to clean lakes for fishing, swimming and boating; to protect wildlife for hunters and trappers and MNF works to keep air pollution out of the picture.
